University of Oregon Recreation & Fitness Center

Landscape design of the Recreation and Fitness center addressed building edges, adjacent courtyards and terraces, streetscapes and field areas. The finish floor elevation of the entry is approximately seven feet above the adjacent sidewalk so a terraced entry plaza with walls, planters, stairs, and a water feature acts as a transitional area, offering places to sit, pause, or pass through. Walled planters cascade from the building, harmonizing with the architecture and providing connection to adjacent spaces. Bike shelters and street trees provide a transition between the mass of the building and the street while a small public courtyard provide an accessible route to the entrance. A raised sundeck was located south of the center. It serves as a quiet, protected space enhanced with distinctive paving, benches, and plantings and overlooking the field areas and tennis courts.
