Harris Hall Plaza (Lane County Courthouse)

In response to downtown growth and increased need for public space, the entry and adjacent plaza at the Lane County Courthouse have undergone a major renovation. The old plaza sat four feet above the street, constricting the corner and obscuring views of the building entrance. The new plaza resolves these issues by re-claiming the corner at street level while retaining and celebrating a large existing oak. A strong pedestrian axis leading to a wide stairway and ramp leads visitors to the main entry of the building. A generous curving bench built into a curving wall, raised planters, integrated speaker’s podium and new bronze sculpture of Senator Wayne Morse give form and definition to the plaza and draw people into the space. This public space now resonates in harmony with the adjacent park blocks to support the Eugene Saturday and Farmers Markets.
